My quilt design, Freedom's Journey is in the current issue of the <a href="https://www.quiltingdaily.com/fons-porters-quick-easy-quilts-june-july-2022/?query=Freedom%27s+journey"><span style="color: red;">Fon's and Porter Quick and Easy Quilts magazine</span></a>. It's sized just right for a Quilts of Valor project, or would be pretty in any combination of fabrics. It would also be easy to make larger as the blocks are large and easy to construct. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUuFJf677JfNmk1h2CGEhmc-Enu596H375PQPLIrOL91swZFK2C-G6HLm488Qp-YOjGYwcRJMmGnElZ7OgjUTZblrxEVUdPWbga9FzyIXxp0hfjxUyMh6EgsiIEIk0CNQUyGiTLqc7vuiB2Z5OwWGMYzBq4UD2jetlHUsldi7OzaiDGI1OHAVnR92hJg/s320/Freedom%27s%20journey5.jpg" width="320" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I took this photo in the full sun so the beautiful quilting shows up really well. The first one was the Piping Hot Topper. I chose it to be first because it's an all around fun design and easy to make using just about any fabrics. Holiday prints and other novelties can easily be fussy cut and used in the square in a square blocks. We had a lot of fun checking out everyone's fabrics. I gave them a precutting list, so some of them finished the top in class. It was nice to get together with family again. I got to meet my new great nephew, Hayden when he came to visit from Wisconsin. What a cutie and had lots of smiles to share. I had made him a quilt using 2 different block patterns from <a href="https://sewfreshquilts.com/">Sew Fresh Quilts. </a> I love her animal patterns and she offers quilt patterns and also some of the cute blocks as stand alone block patterns. I used the Love Birds block, the Elephant block and some half square triangles to make a design of my own. The patterns are easy to download and follow. I've used several of her other patterns to make similarly <a href="https://quiltinjeanie.blogspot.com/2020/09/precious-babies.html">adorable dog quilts</a>. The design was my version of clouds of snow coming down and ending softly on the ground. Living in the Midwest, snowfall can sometimes be really annoying, especially when you have to get somewhere, but it can also be really beautiful as it comes down, coating all the trees and landscape in a coat of white. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjziV8AMaDnoWe9tPNAc-AeV4fUh2AJaSL5mi6rC1tg3UMPxG3CBVkFV1LKVH58W3g2Lca3KpLCzkyR5onvHnOKd7t6Pay2h0mg_YRxbLIOYXvFqsY5f-qASH75xwqbzZPbCy5Ftb0RoL3e/s768/Snowfall+picture2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjziV8AMaDnoWe9tPNAc-AeV4fUh2AJaSL5mi6rC1tg3UMPxG3CBVkFV1LKVH58W3g2Lca3KpLCzkyR5onvHnOKd7t6Pay2h0mg_YRxbLIOYXvFqsY5f-qASH75xwqbzZPbCy5Ftb0RoL3e/s320/Snowfall+picture2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>It was exciting to hear and I got busy and started making it. The blocks at the top of the quilt are bigger and somewhat darker...then they get lighter as they get to the bottom. I didn't use ombre fabric, but gave it an ombre look by using the fabrics that I did.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaH767M8QZGbxK9aLHLm6ODKW7U3TaUYHLbpXLxSkfgwdypkl6mDmj-UM6myvpTlCRjJdLhCshHV7MOxrzWr2BeJWQB-He5jmCqleKdBDmxJWl3-C8eUUOXHKRVGjR8N2Rzb3axhPyc6r5/s4160/20210711_093307.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4160" data-original-width="3120" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaH767M8QZGbxK9aLHLm6ODKW7U3TaUYHLbpXLxSkfgwdypkl6mDmj-UM6myvpTlCRjJdLhCshHV7MOxrzWr2BeJWQB-He5jmCqleKdBDmxJWl3-C8eUUOXHKRVGjR8N2Rzb3axhPyc6r5/s320/20210711_093307.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>I was on retreat when I finished it, so put a quilt on this large cutting table and used it press the quilt. I wanted snowflakes, but nothing too heavy. He had an edge to edge he liked and came up with the idea to redesign the computerized pattern to quilt it heavier in the lighter areas of the quilt and lighter in the areas where the blocks were more pronounced. Sort of a reverse ombre to the pattern I had made with the blocks. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiekzPe0TbXn-qy_grRTM2AB3PVDSXL_wC97kvxeMGtk_xuHxahqMImSxniKCh8fN3wQIxNUsiKs7HlRyIzC6IBoAtr9kGJc2nifokl-A_vdg5DxMMPnrh3yBvjdmwgCb7hZCBDTQCVACsF/s816/snowfall4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="608" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiekzPe0TbXn-qy_grRTM2AB3PVDSXL_wC97kvxeMGtk_xuHxahqMImSxniKCh8fN3wQIxNUsiKs7HlRyIzC6IBoAtr9kGJc2nifokl-A_vdg5DxMMPnrh3yBvjdmwgCb7hZCBDTQCVACsF/s320/snowfall4.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>He sent me pix as he worked and after it was finished. The ombre quilting doesn't show up well in the magazine pix, but you can see it better in these. I didn't get a lot of pictures taken of it before I sent it off, so hope to get some better ones of the quilting when I get it back. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6iHbe-86e-fumO9p2SwdSEMRBEugL0pFYgQrpDwOuyMNjPPj-6S24aCQQeIQEmOT__uzOpTRdrUnne5cUp2OUzIlY7NbSzCk-J1apme3BB2sX9DakrkV7iGijVUKy1Cv0_rCdugca0mGI/s816/snowfall5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; I started with this one because it lends itself well to using focus fabrics in the corner squares and could be used for any seasonal fabrics. I made mine using some summery prints I have been eyeing for awhile. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3vAf_alUjaxWjjtmvnHg5xbxmdGOmTbYNodbcMQudENBUanmMSwSagsDi6rkOYLMAt59F9r2D4bofYhR2aEe4HfnYME6NFPanS4jRU0H475AGjZiL8yKmzF0JXYj1UX04stL3xfqJqR43/s3088/20211127_134656.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3088" data-original-width="3088" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3vAf_alUjaxWjjtmvnHg5xbxmdGOmTbYNodbcMQudENBUanmMSwSagsDi6rkOYLMAt59F9r2D4bofYhR2aEe4HfnYME6NFPanS4jRU0H475AGjZiL8yKmzF0JXYj1UX04stL3xfqJqR43/s320/20211127_134656.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>At the pattern size, it could be used to make a floor pillow top as well. I made a couple of pillow tops using the pattern as a guide. The holiday pillow above uses the pattern minus the final border to make a pillow that is 24" x 24". The batik version below uses only the center block, adding a border to finish at 12" x 12". I made both with an envelope style back so it's easy to wash if necessary.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC9lCZmKQMs-RNUCMTjAwhg1VSV572Tz4-jJ-IiEUYSbmzcjst2VmXwuVuUkftwChWjFYMU3QpuyudIBCbtnWGrGCWoSQjQHsq78Mip3CeObiN2PvvR7V_DmexkdOPyR6HC4TMWSPXi3id/s3088/20211129_110401.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3088" data-original-width="3088" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC9lCZmKQMs-RNUCMTjAwhg1VSV572Tz4-jJ-IiEUYSbmzcjst2VmXwuVuUkftwChWjFYMU3QpuyudIBCbtnWGrGCWoSQjQHsq78Mip3CeObiN2PvvR7V_DmexkdOPyR6HC4TMWSPXi3id/s320/20211129_110401.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I personally like a pattern that can be versatile with more than one use, so I think others probably do too. <p></p><p>Everyone in the class chose such pretty fabrics. I've made several versions of this bag for friends and family and thought they would like it to take on sleepovers or to the pool. The vinyl mesh makes it really nice to use for wet suits and towels during swimming weather. There are 6 categories of quilts to enjoy. I had a great time looking through the entries. Lots of gorgeous quilts to use for inspiration, creativity and motivation. You can also watch live demonstrations of products and techniques. There are prizes drawn every day, as well as some prizes at the end for the entrants. She is updating the original pattern from the book Wedgeworks. I sewed the scalloped edge down carefully with matching thread. I always use matching thread when topstitching. I've had plenty of experience topstitching, but that doesn't mean it will turn out perfectly. It was approximately 19.5" at this point. Since I made it to try the technique, I was only going to make one block. I added a one inch border to it and an envelope back so that it can be used for a 20" pillow. It could also be used as a tabletopper.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVTn8e-YPK7yDrme5JU3SeGJTXXacCQnDk4sdAY6F1ejl-NuBJvUCpYnJ2ndXPFuAIRA471pNrTdJmycCqukOmTULMHYpH2AVfHzyImCevYXhsTRF6KwVoQYBqt30ldKcKscYaQwu5xchl/s960/wedgeworks+sunflower5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVTn8e-YPK7yDrme5JU3SeGJTXXacCQnDk4sdAY6F1ejl-NuBJvUCpYnJ2ndXPFuAIRA471pNrTdJmycCqukOmTULMHYpH2AVfHzyImCevYXhsTRF6KwVoQYBqt30ldKcKscYaQwu5xchl/s320/wedgeworks+sunflower5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> The folding technique was fun to try and a pretty easy way to accomplish these nice points. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN4VJ7MOyV_ULcoiF2vrjFh5HuGf8CtCyxV9-oqM0Aep9-8yAFqQsdBZlGqHM_uuAEu16BpyOnyIT7qQiftwT1MS3coZvMKMNtVxeL7HyrHSJ_jUrEcyf7FGYDCUHIxwEMoIOf3jOmDz_O/s696/wedgeworks+sunflower6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="694" data-original-width="696" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN4VJ7MOyV_ULcoiF2vrjFh5HuGf8CtCyxV9-oqM0Aep9-8yAFqQsdBZlGqHM_uuAEu16BpyOnyIT7qQiftwT1MS3coZvMKMNtVxeL7HyrHSJ_jUrEcyf7FGYDCUHIxwEMoIOf3jOmDz_O/s320/wedgeworks+sunflower6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_zyochyphenhyphen7yqQ_v3tVGksEem5cVQv10z09NLEVC_aUOCsG4CBFK67B3YoLOYqZKrespJa25OlH7xT081sA6oSCOS8sRIdKl6fwx90autByOtvKtR_Xn7W-Ot3qDvzePExd-NtuvACXp4XWJ/s2015/wedgeworks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Jean http://www.blogger.com/profile/02953574832610193585noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8332229841630769565.post-88180215758816366272021-04-01T12:54:00.002-05:002021-04-01T13:06:23.132-05:00Spinning Stars<p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/QuiltinjeanieDesigns"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEaZFPyfknqffwxB2IyUz2zncOsdWW6jKGyRcHSqhQdTnSJsIMNpRT8m0D22hPX2kMPSqR0V3WmDcMSrFqY0-yVpxm4-HdG6Hy8lt5SkPKFfHHWsHd68gEb2ZjF7zaZACpeD1Q5tNzLBYz/s320/Night+Sky.jpg" /></a></span></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/QuiltinjeanieDesigns">Night Sky Sampler 28</a></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">A couple of years ago, I designed the Night Sky Sampler 28 quilt to teach techniques to other quilters in my classes. I used a combination of blocks including one I designed, Spinning Star. Since that star turned out to be a favorite of mine, I wanted to try a design using only it and some small star-colored squares. I wanted the stars and faux stars to be scattered across the quilt which is sometimes harder to do than making rows of blocks. So I spent a lot of time playing with them once I had them constructed.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3GpQUGJW6LTj09rbYlMcG5guTmV7Q1w8ERzdP4FdEfpC6oNzLFYxP8eZKf787UHttH__etQ_-2cZt6mE-jrAMYZOPS55__dQyNfR-YlIB-FLHz5wojnp1GQ7_XIRmhIt54mXt5SyUy5C/s960/spinningstar2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3GpQUGJW6LTj09rbYlMcG5guTmV7Q1w8ERzdP4FdEfpC6oNzLFYxP8eZKf787UHttH__etQ_-2cZt6mE-jrAMYZOPS55__dQyNfR-YlIB-FLHz5wojnp1GQ7_XIRmhIt54mXt5SyUy5C/s320/spinningstar2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPXg3UQ_mX7_S1lPI9v3jehw7S2SUPzpz_7LfkpwEDfcFeGhBgN-JNJoq1fAc8WjCeTKpA0wMCe3cAiyiKONm6OkEoofk5YZDEghoh6vchcDJLSW4IeMhrxALnCwX2UaBHCp_CvyT7ltH/s960/starscat.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPXg3UQ_mX7_S1lPI9v3jehw7S2SUPzpz_7LfkpwEDfcFeGhBgN-JNJoq1fAc8WjCeTKpA0wMCe3cAiyiKONm6OkEoofk5YZDEghoh6vchcDJLSW4IeMhrxALnCwX2UaBHCp_CvyT7ltH/s320/starscat.jpg" /></a></div>I made a large star out of like fabrics for the backing and added some half square triangles and borders to make it the correct size. The room the quilt frame is in can be a dumping ground for the leftovers from projects since I store my fabric in that room, too. When I'm working on a project, I save most scraps because you never know if you'll need every bit you have until you're finished. I've been going through those scraps and organizing them into usuable, unusable and won't use. Some pieces are big enough for a pillowcase, so I have a pile of them to make now. <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr0rClrAEry-NtIq3HRKfEHgWfDu5r1ctsucZVzpioSTqDhLiAGrG2Fm6jU4VZV-rN6Eao9kHpOBEb_SXQmuQsb97Ajja4Bo40o1bp8Q8cU02ypBUoC7xmCuwxGtfDvyIOOSuLfSN6Stba/s2576/20200819_131923.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1932" data-original-width="2576" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr0rClrAEry-NtIq3HRKfEHgWfDu5r1ctsucZVzpioSTqDhLiAGrG2Fm6jU4VZV-rN6Eao9kHpOBEb_SXQmuQsb97Ajja4Bo40o1bp8Q8cU02ypBUoC7xmCuwxGtfDvyIOOSuLfSN6Stba/s640/20200819_131923.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>Question of the day: Would Conrad use a hammock if I made him one? <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuYByCqvuHKMLrFGdq4D0_p1gWIUMfgt3JgPe9hdQrAZYaoBkQWqetDIn3MxxemBUxbcPKHUl_50Kha6Cdf9Ue6lLb325wTbRngehLvqVF7O6XG04DtBPzDI-gfiZJI5uLWTn1qsJdElXa/s2576/20200828_111903.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1932" data-original-width="2576" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuYByCqvuHKMLrFGdq4D0_p1gWIUMfgt3JgPe9hdQrAZYaoBkQWqetDIn3MxxemBUxbcPKHUl_50Kha6Cdf9Ue6lLb325wTbRngehLvqVF7O6XG04DtBPzDI-gfiZJI5uLWTn1qsJdElXa/s640/20200828_111903.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>Two are finished. She also did a class to help us learn the techniques and ease of paper piecing the Judy N. way. It was very informative, and a fun, faster way to pp using strip piecing methods. We did some precutting before class so that we could get a head start on the day of class. The precutting was definitely worth it, as it takes some time in itself. By precutting, we were able to start in with the sewing right away. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihntT3wViNcfXOp_5yUsAsrov7GBIDQvXeOyzlA4UJrNcD3WRGVRZxae2yDHD6x7Fpe8MpAxSFEcNUifYXQwHjx8KIyviWVl9R0q48txA1cKVkB3g4vyIax7wZP0AOuwiggOMfz32q1R-7/s960/desert+sky4.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihntT3wViNcfXOp_5yUsAsrov7GBIDQvXeOyzlA4UJrNcD3WRGVRZxae2yDHD6x7Fpe8MpAxSFEcNUifYXQwHjx8KIyviWVl9R0q48txA1cKVkB3g4vyIax7wZP0AOuwiggOMfz32q1R-7/s640/desert+sky4.gif" width="640" /></a></div>I got about two thirds of it done, then set it aside for awhile to work on other projects for classes. When I finished it a few months ago, I accidently turned some around and sewed them together partially in the wrong order. So up close isn't quite right, but at a distance it looks fine, I think. (If you are reading this Connie, don't look too closely!)<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6uWH65Y7xEjBPvwd6jAgIJDjrJNZZk5xHQ794FxwgRYo20ZnhwAAno9Gh23ITx3Q04e7b_t-OK7q_v_Ilbckb0s7K4ZAmc05xgZRCN79f6zYUyZ_15h8Sy-7Hgp7PxPKhDUQxGCZ7gItl/s960/desert+sky6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6uWH65Y7xEjBPvwd6jAgIJDjrJNZZk5xHQ794FxwgRYo20ZnhwAAno9Gh23ITx3Q04e7b_t-OK7q_v_Ilbckb0s7K4ZAmc05xgZRCN79f6zYUyZ_15h8Sy-7Hgp7PxPKhDUQxGCZ7gItl/s640/desert+sky6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpqow-eCgL3WC4fjg60Foa_zGaXfxL50_DTOzjuW-bND5l-PoWLnuzC_CctdBlAroyomIypiDF8dW7rTxtPVeQSCpICZRwxh3CVOr5pxHISGQygxrTfARiKljvtOO5NoPIITp241J3F7lU/s960/desert+sky7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpqow-eCgL3WC4fjg60Foa_zGaXfxL50_DTOzjuW-bND5l-PoWLnuzC_CctdBlAroyomIypiDF8dW7rTxtPVeQSCpICZRwxh3CVOr5pxHISGQygxrTfARiKljvtOO5NoPIITp241J3F7lU/s640/desert+sky7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>I recently quilted and bound it, so it's officially finished.
