Binding Frenzy

 I have been getting some bindings done lately...on my quilts and two of my mom's.

My Honeycomb Waffle Too. This was partially sewn and I used it when I taught 

the class. I finished it recently, quilted it and now it's bound. I really like the vivid colors on the back in relation to the mostly neutral front.

Conrad likes the Squirrelly Girls quilt and claimed it when it was waiting to be bound. 

I quilted both of mine (above) recently after I had my midarm worked on. It's working well again, so keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm working on this one now.

We all need a little quilty therapy, don't we?

Our LQS, Cut Up and Quilt, has a monthly "therapy" session for their customers to show off new gadgets, fabrics and patterns. They do two sessions (afternoon and evening) on the third Thursday every month.  It's fun to go and see what's new, plus they have a show and tell portion. I took these Runaround Bags that I've been working on to show off. I love this little bag and think it will be perfect for quilt shows and shopping trips when you don't want to lug around the bag you carry your life in (normally called a purse).

 I'm making one for my daughter to use when she takes her dogs out to carry her phone, doggie treats and doggie bags. The cross body handle makes it easy to carry and keep your hands free.

I will be teaching a class on this bag at Cut Up and Quilt in Sept. so wanted to show it off. 

There were lots of fun projects shown for show and tell. It's always fun when the show and tell projects were made from classes I taught or my patterns. Pris M. brought her Red, White and True Quilt Along blocks so I could see them. She is using some of her mom's fabrics that she has been saving for just the right quilt.

 Lorraine brought her finished Honeycomb Waffle beauty. I don't often get to see them finished, so I always enjoy it. Several of us commented on her floral borders and she said they just seemed to fit...we always know, don't we?

Darlene brought her finished Cottage quilt. I hosted a Cottage Block Swap a few years ago. We swapped in small groups and by season. So everyone ended up with cottage blocks for each season made by their friends. I then hosted a class to make trees and other stuff to add to them. Here is a post about my finished cottage quilt. I meant to catch her afterwards for a better picture, but I didn't. Seeing her quilt made me want to host another swap, so I'm adding that to the summer To-Do list! Not sure what it will be at this point, but I will keep you posted.

Honeycomb Waffle Too class

 I had a great time last Sat. teaching the techniques to make the Honeycomb Waffle, Too quilt. Lots of enthusiasm and a new quilter who really needed to make that quilt. We all know that feeling, right?

 I love watching these 3-D blocks come together. The book ABC 3-D Tumbling Blocks and More by Marci Baker makes it so easy to do these types of quilts.

 I sewed with the Tuesday Sewers yesterday...another thing I love about summer break! I put the back together for the Red, White and True quilt and made the binding. I hit a little snag in my quilting plans when I hurt my knee the other night, but hope to get it loaded soon and quilted. I had planned to load the new sampler and get it quilted too, but haven't been able to.

Anyway...I also worked on some more blocks for the working model that I've been using for the classes. I hope to get it finished this summer. I am using mostly blacks and grays for this version.

I've added the link to the free Craftsy version of the Red, White and True Quilt Along Guidelines and Supply List. It is in PDF form, so you will need Adobe Reader to download it. I will add a PDF version of the pattern for each week's tutorial to Craftsy for easy downloading and saving. These will be in pattern form, not tutorials.  Then you can save to your computer and make it again. 

I would love to see your fabric choices on my Flickr group....head over there and add a picture! If you have any problems, let me know and I will add them for you. I think it will be fun to watch everyone's progress. 

Rainy, quilty afternoon....

 Yesterday I hosted a UFO Saturday...it was the perfect day to stay inside and sew. Brenda brought her Lone Star to work on. She had the two halves made and partially sewn together. She was having trouble sewing the two sections together so we figured out what the problem was and she got it sewn. Next she cut out her corner squares and side triangles...they are large, so it's nice to have more space in the classroom to do that! Then she started sewing them in.

 Jane spent some time arranging her Honeycomb Waffle half blocks until she had it the way she wanted. She made some blocks with some color mixed in with her gray/black filler blocks, which add an interesting touch. Jane loves colorful batiks, can you tell?

Dianne worked on her Beads, Buttons and Baubles quilt. She did a lot of cutting and prepping so will soon be ready to put the rest of her blocks together. 

 Brenda finished her Lone Star center....wowser! I love these huge stars and they look gorgeous in all color combos. I have two people interested in taking this class, so if you live in the area and are interested, let me know....I will schedule around the interested quilter's schedules if possible. I also have a quilter who wants me to teach the Honeycomb Waffle, Too class again. I love teaching this class, so if you are interested too, let me know!

 Jane got her rows sewn together vertically, so is probably sewing them together this morning. She was undecided when we left yesterday about her top and bottom setting triangles. She had cut some black ones, bu thought they might be too dark. She will have to decide soon!

I had sewn together some more strips the other night in anticipation of my Summer Fling Stringpiecing Workshop next Sat. at Cut Up and Quilt, so I cut them out in between helping the others. I will probably have enough for a small quilt or if I don't I will have to make more so I don't waste them....this happens to me a lot, ok?

I had some black/tan leftover jelly roll strips so I sewed them together as well. Not sure how they will look mixed in with the more colorful ones, but hopefully I can use them together. Then I cut some solid blocks out of the pink polka dot fabric I used on the back of one of my Peas in a Pod quilts. I still have some solid colored blocks left from the original quilt, too. 

It was a fun day of sewing, chatting and sharing ideas. I think we planned several more quilts while they worked on these! Isn't that always the way it goes?

Don't tell the bees, but we love these Honeycombs!

Quilters had a great time learning how to make 3-D Honeycombs in Saturday's Honeycomb Waffle, Too class at Cut Up and Quilt. We had some great discussions about how to choose 3 shades of a similar color so as to achieve those 3-D looks. It was fun to look around at all of their blocks as they worked on them. This quilt is from the book  ABC 3 -D Tumbling Blocks and More book by Marci Baker.

 We noticed that when the same color was all stacked up, it looked like the little cube was sitting on a larger cube. Interesting pattern that you don't notice so much when you have muliple colors.

Teaching this class just makes me want to finish my working model. I really need to get a few other projects finished first, though. I'm writing a pattern today and having a hard time staying at my computer since the weather is gorgeous and springy outside! Sigh....

More sampler fun!

When I got to class on Tuesday night, Pat had her finished Row by Row Sampler to show off! What a beauty! Plus Dianne had been sewing with the Tuesday sewing group and had her rows sewn vertically on her Honeycomb Waffle quilt. Lots of color and 3-D goodness.

Most of them got their Ribbon block finished last night and it looked great with their blocks from last time.

I spent time last  night working on some flyers, and other class related stuff. Tonight is probably more of the same, but it's good to get it finished! I want to start quilting the new quilt, but it will probably have to wait until the weekend.

I taught the Honeycomb Waffle, Too class yesterday at Cut Up and Quilt. It was a great lesson in choosing fabrics of different values to make an eye-catching optical illusion. Once the quilters got some blocks on the design wall, we talked about how some of the values related to others.

 We noticed that the darks didn't always have to be the same level of darkness.

 The mediums are the trickiest to choose: sometimes a medium could be a light or dark, depending on what the value of the other fabrics are that are paired with it.

 Tone on tones and batiks worked well for this quilt, but so did fabrics with more definite patterns.

Some lights were really light...some were not so light. It didn't matter, as long as they related well to the other two fabrics in their set.

 Stripes make wonderful patterns as well as add to the design.

  It was a great class and once they knew what to do, they really worked hard, getting many half blocks finished. I think that there will be some finished quilts soon.

I will be teaching this class again in March, so I asked them to bring their finished tops to show that class what they can do. (it was a thinly disguised challenge!)

 I need to do some cleaning today, then hope to finish the new quilt that I started on retreat. Maybe I will get some inspiration while doing so and get it named! Happy Sunday!
